Bling StrandsOh, my love affair with hair…  I’m very well known for experimenting with my hair. I’ve had just about every hair color there is (even unnatural colors like pink!). I’ve had my hair cut and styled in many, many ways. It’s safe to say that I’m pretty much always on the lookout for cool hair accessories, and so I am happy to announce that I have discovered a new, amazing new way to spice up my hair!

While browsing online, I came across a company called Bling Strands. Bling Strands are shiny, shimmering fibers that are tied to a single strand of hair and the effect is wicked! The tiny fibers light up your hair in a way that no other product I’d ever seen had accomplished. The added glistening fibers gave hair a stunning, fairy-tale-like quality that I wanted to try for myself. I contacted Bling Strands and they agreed to let me try some out AND let one of my lucky readers try them out as well!!

Who Is Bling Strands?

Bling Strands, LLC is a Utah based business that was founded in 2008 by Joanne Richardson and Angela Cooley. The pair had some strands tied to their hair at a small local craft fair and wore them for several weeks. In this time, they were amazed at the attention their hair was receiving. Everyone wanted to know where the ladies had gotten this neat, new hair accessory and where they could get some for themselves. The two ladies searched for weeks, until they finally found their supplier. Soon after, Bling Strands was born! A high percentage of Bling Strands’ business comes from repeat customers and referrals, so customer service is very important to Bling Strands. Bling Strands believes in having fun and looking great. Bring On The Bling

The idea of tying shimmering strands of iridescent thread originates in Asia. Bling Strands are the very first of this type of product to be manufactured in the United States.  Bling Strands are a clothing-grade mylar synthetic fiber. They are manufactured of the highest quality available and come from the same manufacturer that supplies fabrics to Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, and Vera Wang.  They are guaranteed to be lead-free, non-toxic, and non-flammable. The strands are safe and temporary. You don’t need any tools, glue, or chemicals to put them in. They can be worn for special occasions such as proms, weddings, vacations, anniversaries, and dance/cheer squads. You can even wear them as an everyday look! Bling Strands can last on average 4 weeks, varying according to the rate you in which you lose hair and how gently you treat your hair. When you have Bling Strands in your hair, you can still wash, condition, comb, blowdry, or use any styling product as you normally do. You can even safely use a curling iron or a flat iron on medium heat (up to 425 degrees) while wearing them! No matter what your age or style, whether your hair is light or dark, long or short, Bling Strands will add shimmer and dazzle to your hair with a simple knot.

Stylists are charging $2 and more per strand, but you can easily install Bling Strands into your hair at home. It takes only about 15 minutes for an experienced user to “Bling” a whole head of hair. The average hairstyle uses only 10-15 strands, and removing them is as easy as giving the strand a gentle tug to pop it out.

My Experience

When my Bling Strands arrived, I couldn’t wait to try them out! I got a set in the color Sizzling Champagne, and they were gorgeous! I’m a little clumsy, so I knew I should probably try tying the strands in someone else’s hair before I tried it on myself. Luckily, they arrived the weekend that my niece was visiting from out of state, so I had a willing volunteer to try them out on! I loved that the package was easily opened and resealable. You just simply open bottom of package and the remove strands one by one, leaving the rest intact, and reseal the package for future use. However, the actual enclosed instructions confused me. Luckily, Bling Strands have a How-To Video on their website. After watching the video, I felt prepared to give it a-go. I had to have my niece help me a bit here in there, but we got it done and the result was fabulous!

Of course, I had to try some Bling Strands out for myself!! Putting in the strands in my own hair was a bit of a challenge for me. From being familiar with crochet, I altered their technique to tie the slip knot first, and then loop my strand of hair through as I found this to be easier. I still needed an extra finger to hold down the slipknot as I tied the Bling Strand in to secure it, my fiance had to lend me his finger. I can see how someone else might be able to do this easily by themselves, but this was really a two-person job for me. In the end, I was thrilled with the way my hair looked adorned with Bling Strands. My camera really does the Bling Strands no justice, these strands are just so glittery and beautiful!

Remember how I was talking about how I love to experiment with my hair earlier? Here’s a little-known fact: In the name of my website, Goldiloc’s Sweepstakes & Reviews, Goldilocs = Blonde + Dreadlocks, which is me! Ever since I can remember, I have loved the style of dreadlocks in hair, and I have personally had three full-head sets. Currently, I only have around 10 dreadlocks as I have combed most of the old ones out, but I still love to show them off. Some are decorated with Kano beads and one is wrapped with some hemp my mother-in-law to-be gifted me. I knew that Bling Strands would be so amazing to use to adorn my ‘locs, so I had to try that out, too.

On one dreadlock, I simply wrapped a bling strand around it over and over to create a pretty glistening band. In another, I wrapped the Bling Strand the same as before, just spaced further apart. Lastly, I used a small crochet hook to weave a Bling Strand in to a dreadlock. I think it looks great and I am really excited to tell all my dread-head friends about Bling Strands!
